You're listening to Sound Opinions and this week we're talking with Janet Bean and Rick Rizzo of a LEMS Dream Day.

0:41.8

I'm Jim DeWergottas and I'm Greg Cutt. We'll look back over the bands 40 years of music, but first some new music from Wednesday and Lankam.

1:05.8

That is a little bit of a song called Turkey Vultures from the new album by Wednesday and Greg, I love this title.

1:31.8

Who is Wednesday? This is a group from Asheville, North Carolina on the very hip indie label Dead Oceans revolving around vocalist Carly Hartzmann.

1:48.8

She apparently was attending college in Asheville and saw Mitske's tiny desk concert on an PR and said, I've got to start playing guitar.

1:57.8

The band has been going for some time now. I think one of the keys to understanding it is the covers album it released in 2022, mowing the leaves instead of piling them up, which featured covers by Chris Bell and Drive by Truckers by The Smashing Pumpkins and Vic Chestnut.

2:18.8

A little country, a little shoegase, psychonelic noise, not to tip my hand in the review.

2:24.8

This album, the fifth in its career, is garnering the most attention by far that Wednesday has so far received.

2:32.8

Let's play a track from it and we'll give our reviews. This is a song called Bull Believer or a little part of it because it's an eight and a half minute epic, Bull Believer by Wednesday from Ratsoga.

2:48.8

I sat on the stairs with a lady running in the woods waiting. You were playing in the water column.

3:03.8

That is Bull Believer from the new Wednesday record, Ratsoga. I just love that title.

3:25.8

Early on in the record, you get eight minutes of pure confrontation. When I was listening to this track and I'm just going, what the hell is this?

3:34.8

It's just like getting hit between the eyes with a rock. Screams from Carly Hartzmann.

3:40.8

You'd have to go back to Courtney Love in her heyday.

3:44.8

I was thinking like those Yoko Ono records that were sort of viled back in the day and now look almost futuristic, like predicting what would happen years later.

3:52.8

I was thinking about this old idea of confrontation gym. That seems to be a lost art in rock.

3:58.8

Guitar-based rock bands. Who's doing the real confrontation where you have to either love it or you absolutely hate it but there's no middle ground on this and they basically stake out their turf here.

4:10.8

To me, what pulled me in about that track and I think the context is important because the rest of the album isn't quite in that vein but it's still pretty damn great.

4:19.8

Not only is Hartzmann a terrific songwriter and guitarist and confrontational vocalist, you've got a great band.

4:27.8

The mix of the Shougaes overpowering blast furnace guitars plus that pedal steel bringing this country element into that twang.
