Today I welcome Val Garver, who is a medievalist at Northern Illinois University, specializes

in the life of women and children in the medieval period.

So, she's the perfect person to talk about Arya's second POV chapter in a clash of kings.

Then, I talk House of the Dragon with Medieval Historian Ian McKinnus.

What's your relationship with this book, A Clash of Kings?

Well, I first read the book after I watched the first season of the TV show Game of Thrones.

And that was because I hate spoilers or having something given away to me before I either

see or read it.

And so, after I watched the first season, I kind of got hooked and I thought, I'm going

to read the books so that no one then tells me something.

And messes up for me so I can experience it firsthand via the books.

So, that was how I first came to the books.

Now, were you already a professional historian interested in the medieval world or where

does this find you in terms of your career?

Oh, it was when I was well into my career as a medieval historian.

Okay.

So, yeah, that's the turn of how I came to it.

I also, in part, thought when I saw the show, my students are going to ask about this,

because over the years, there's been various books or movies and students, you can kind

of predict.
