Hey everyone Jody here a quick word before we start this episode about Jimmy Carter. I just want to acknowledge the big piece of news the death of Ruth Bader Ginsburg Supreme Court justice

obviously a massive piece of news something that will have big implications for decades to come

potentially and you know we're putting out a regular episode but I didn't want to put it out

without acknowledging that news and also to point out that we have done an episode about Ruth

better Ginsburg so if you haven't heard it go back in the archives and check it

out it was a conversation with Dahlia Lithwick and I thought it did a really good

job I learned a lot really summing up her political evolution and really what made her a remarkable

Supreme Court justice and political and cultural figure.

This day, September 20th, 1976, a few weeks before election day, Democratic candidate Jimmy Carter

gave a wide-ranging interview in Playboy magazine in it among other things Carter said this

so I'm just going to read you kind of the full quote but Carter says Christ said I tell you that anyone who looks on a woman with lust in his heart already

has committed adultery.

I've looked on a woman with lust, I've committed adultery in my heart many times this is something that God

recognizes I will do and I have done and God forgives me for it. Now Carter had

given an interview with of all people Doris Curans Goodwin around the same time and said similar things

and we found out many years later that Curans Goodwin decided not

to publish those comments.

But then Carter gave an interview with Playboy not long after and said similar things and Playboy did publish those comments and
