This year's midterm elections will decide which party controls the Senate and Congress, and the stage is set for a crisis of faith in the democratic process.

Political polarization is at an all-time high.

Many voters have doubted the validity of election results since 2000 when George W. Bush was declared the winner by the U.S. Supreme Court.

Now there is evidence that Russian hackers are trying again to erode voter confidence.

President Trump may deny that, but he has a record of predicting widespread voter fraud.

Are state election officials doing enough to keep the voting secure? Are they getting the help they need from Washington?

Lawrence Norton is an elections expert at the Brennan Center for Justice at NYU School of

Law. Good to have you with us. Thank you for having me on, Warren. You have done a progress

report on this issue.

Tell us, if you will, what you found?

Well, first of all, I should say there are many aspects to election system security,

and there has been a lot of progress made in the past couple of years on things like information sharing

between the federal government

and state and local election officials.

There's been a lot of training of local election officials around cybersecurity issues,

but specifically on the issue of protecting our voting machines,

the systems that we vote on and then where votes are counted up on,

by several key metrics, we have made surprisingly little progress since 2016.

Okay, now voting machines might or might not have a paper trail,

so you can check what the machines have said.
