Summary

Newspapers aren’t as powerful as they were, but they still behave as if they are – and they remain overwhelmingly biased towards a Tory Party that could well be dying. How will they handle a new Labour government? Are the days of press power over? And where does the new power lie? Gavin Esler asks Goldsmiths Senior Journalism Lecturer Terry Kirby in The Bunker.  Buy The Newsmongers: A History of Tabloid Journalism through our affiliate bookshop and you’ll help fund The Bunker by earning us a small commission for every sale. Hello and welcome to the bunker I'm Gavin Esler. As readers of British newspapers over the years may have noticed,

0:15.0

it's not too fanciful to suggest that the UK's right-wing press seems to have lost its way.

0:21.0

They certainly have lost sales. Have they also lost influence? In May 2024, Press Gazette showed

significant drops in readership across the most popular titles. The Express

0:31.6

down 17% on a year, the Daily Mail down 11%, the Mail on Sunday

0:36.4

down 17%. Perhaps even more significantly, the report said, the above figures do not include the Sun, Times and Telegraph,

0:46.0

titles which have all chosen to keep their ABC

0:49.2

Circulations private since the start of 2020. Why could that be? Embarrassing drops in sales figures

0:56.4

may be the answer although Kieer Starmer and a labor government may offer more opportunities

for traditional tabloid vitriol or could there be an accommodation

with stammer and an uneasy truce at least for a while and whisper it could a major

newspaper even switch to supporting Nigel Farage and reform?

1:16.2

For some perspective on this, I'm delighted to be joined by Terry Kirby, Senior Lecturer

and Journalism at Goldsmiths, University of London,

1:23.0

and the author of The Newsmongers,

a history of tabloid journalism.

1:27.0

Welcome to the bunker Terry.

1:28.0

It's so great to be here, Galvin.

1:30.0

Let's begin with the kind of obvious,

1:32.0

are we clear that a right-wing press does exist in this country,

1:35.1

not all of the papers of course, but that they do dominate tabloid culture, traditionally supporting the

Conservatives?
