I'm Michael Baranowski, a professor of political science at Northern

Kentucky University. Today, in part three of our election 2020 series, we'll be discussing

the Trump and Biden approaches to the coronavirus pandemic, as well as health care policy in general.

We'll start with COVID-19, which has at present led to over 181,000 deaths in the United

States. And with the well-respected IHME model, predicting that U.S. coronavirus deaths will be

at more than 410,000 by the end of this year. Now, the White House argues that President Trump took strong

action early on by banning travel from China, creating what's now the world's largest testing

program from scratch, implementing Operation Warp Speed to help develop a safe and effective vaccine

in record-shattering time, encouraging Americans to not give

into unreasonable fear and striking a judicious balance between public and economic health.

The president's detractors, on the other hand, say that he routinely discounted the seriousness

of the coronavirus, especially early on. He acted far too slowly to ramp

up testing. He failed to adequately coordinate a national response effort and that he's actively

worked against public health measures such as masking, social distancing, and limiting gathering

side. So we'll start today by talking about how President Trump has responded
