In today's episode of a crime, which is published in Puerto Rico at the end of the 80s,

and that after as a consequence, the creation of a law that today has protected some of its effects,

thousands of women from the epidemic of male violence, which is still so latent in our country.

The prevention and intervention against domestic violence,

better known as the day 54, was created on May 15, 1989,

with the end of the physical and emotional internal violence, particularly women and men.

This law created the mechanism of the prevention of domestic violence,

typified domestic violence as a crime, something that until that moment was not like that,

and established as a prevention against the mistreatment in the relationships of couples.

One of the objectives of this law was to understand that violence in the relationship of couples

is not something private, but it is a public matter that the country has to have.

The creation of this law was the first of this type in all the American continent,

even it was implemented first that the law against the woman of 1994, created in the United States.

The approval of the law 54 required a long process and intense struggle,

led by feminists organizations that sought to typify as a crime,

the violence against women in the relationships of couples, particularly within the marriage.

In the middle of this struggle occurred the murder of a woman who provoked that the public discussion

about the problem of domestic violence, and that served as a catalytic,

so that finally she was able to prove herself.
