Summary

Ben Lindbergh and Meg Rowley banter about classifying throws by infielders that are actually made in the outfield, imagine a multi-sport two-way Shohei Ohtani, and belatedly acknowledge Scott Cooper’s singular cycle, discuss Kyle Schwarber’s possible sub-replacement-level 40-homer season, break down the NL MVP race featuring Ronald Acuña Jr., Mookie Betts, and Freddie Freeman, pat Kyle Barraclough on the back for wearing one, note that regression has come for Mickey Moniak, and offer another hosana to Julio Rodríguez. Then they follow up on the previous episode’s mystery about why wild pitches and passed balls have declined, first (1:06:51) by interviewing Yankees quality control and catching coach Tanner Swanson about improvements in catching technique and the evolution of catcher defense, and then (1:37:13) by presenting additional data and theorizing, followed by (1:47:29) a Future Blast from 2052.

| 0:16.0 | Hello and welcome to episode 2052 of Effectively Wild, a baseball podcast from Fan Graphs |
| 0:36.0 | presented by our Patreon supporters. I am Ben Linberg, of the ringer, joined by Meg |
| 0:41.0 | Rally of the Grasslele make. Hello. I don't know if I would call this a peave or a slight objection |
| 0:49.2 | or reservation, but you know how infield throws are all the rage these days, the stat cast measurements |
| 0:56.6 | of how hard infielders are showing. I think this may have come up on one of the episodes when |
| 1:01.5 | I was away, just the difficulty of distinguishing between two velocities when you have an infield |
| 1:10.2 | throw. Sometimes you'll see a throw and it's like, well, that was hard, but was it that much |
| 1:14.5 | harder than that other throw? I don't know, it's kind of tough to tell. But also, we're hearing a |
| 1:19.5 | ton about this these days because Ellie Dela Cruz seems to tap himself every week, right? |
| 1:25.4 | And my objection reservation, though, is that some of these record-setting throws that he's |
| 1:32.7 | making as an infielder are from the outfield, their relay throws, right? And that is part of why |
| 1:43.2 | they are thrown so hard. Now, to be clear, he throws very hard on regular infield throws also. |
| 1:50.6 | So it's not like a product of the play entirely, but I think it is partly a product of the play |
| 1:57.2 | because his two fastest on record are both relay throws. So he had a 99.8 mile per hour |
| 2:07.2 | tracked throw. This was back in July. And then just this week, he had a 99.7. And those were both |
| 2:17.0 | relays where he was way out in the outfield. And he was catching and throwing and really laying out, |
| 2:24.7 | like on the first one in July, he may have actually fallen down after the throw during the follow-through. |
| 2:30.7 | On this most recent one, he didn't fall down, but he definitely put his whole body into the |
| 2:35.9 | heave and sort of stumbled after it a bit. And to me, that's a different category than just your |
| 2:44.5 | regular infield assist when you're on the grass in his case, I guess, or it wasn't this most recent |
| 2:52.0 | game because they were in Arizona and Corbin Carroll was the, I mean, it was a pretty, pretty |
