0:34.1	to be fairly pessimistic about liberalism.
0:37.0	So I'd like partly, maybe a bit out of character these days, to defend a more optimistic perspective.
0:43.4	But having a taste for the esoteric, I'd like to start with a question.
0:46.5	If we go back to the 1680s, and James II takes the throne, and then William of Orange comes over
0:54.9	from what we now call the Netherlands and pushes him out, was that a liberal development,
1:01.9	or an illiberal development?
1:04.2	Yeah, at the time it was very much a liberal development.
1:07.2	And of course, we then get the Bill of Rights.
1:10.3	We then get a further restriction of the power of the monarchy that comes with this new
1:15.5	Dutch co-monarchy, William and Mary.
1:20.1	But in retrospect, given the fact that this is very much the Protestant fundamentalist,
1:25.9	the Battle of the Boyne, the victory of the Orange Forces, William of Orange, in retrospect,
1:31.8	I think it's being celebrated in a pretty illiberal manner.
1:36.0	And of course, that's very germane right now in Britain, given that Theresa May is trying
1:41.7	to form a government in which the DUP, the Elster Unionist Party, are going to make up
1:49.0	the difference between being a minority government and a majority government.
