The Trump administration has today urged the Supreme Court to allow officials to gut the Department of Education.

It's a key priority for the president, which has been hindered by a series of lower court decisions.

And comes days after a Boston appeals court declined to reverse a lower court order

that halted mass layoffs the president ordered at the department earlier this year.

In its emergency appeal to the High Court, the administration says it wants to eliminate, quote,

discretionary functions that are better left to the states.

Though President Donald Trump has repeatedly said he wants to get rid of the department,

the administration's lawyers acknowledge that this can only be done by Congress.

A federal judge who indefinitely paused Trump's plans to dismantle the agency also made that sentiment.

Ordering fired employees to be reinstated and adding that mass layoffs quote,

will likely cripple the department.

In a sign of his breakup with Elon Musk, a senior White House official says President Trump

is planning to get rid of the red Tesla he bought in March.
