President Donald Trump is expected to sign an executive order today to start dismantling the Department of Education.

That's what two administration officials told CNN, saying Trump is holding an event at the White House this afternoon as he fulfills a major campaign promise.

He can't just close the whole department outright.

That would take an act of Congress.

Instead, he's ordering Secretary Linda McMahon to take steps to, quote,

facilitate the closure and put states in charge of education.

I want the states to run schools, and I want Linda to put herself out of a job.

But this school official in Maryland told WJLA this will impact children.

A senior administration official said federal funding for students with disabilities, Title I funding

for low-income schools, and federal student loan payments will not be changed by the order.
