A conversation I had back in 2018 with the historian Fern Raidell about the violence of the

suffragette campaign.

That year marked the centenary of some women in Britain getting the vote, and I was

interviewing Fern about her book Death in 10 Minutes.

I thought this would be an interesting interview to revisit, not just because Fern is such an

engaging speaker, and it's a subject that I personally find fascinating, but also because

the debate that Fern sparked about whether we should see the suffragette's as terrorists

really seemed to hit a nerve with listeners last time round.

So your new book Death in 10 Minutes looks at the life of Kitty Marion, who was a musical

star turns suffragette, could you perhaps introduce us to Kitty Marion, because we might not

already know her, and why you found her so fascinating?

So she was a young German child, Irma Grant, and she fled across from Germany to England,

fleeing her abusive father, and arrived here when she was 15.

And she'd always had this dream to go on the stage.
