Summary

Edgar Cayce was one of the most remarkable and mysterious men of the twentieth century. Sometimes called “the Sleeping Prophet” or “the Miracle Man of Virginia Beach,” he was stuck with taglines that more often than not reflected the sensationalistic side of his work rather than its real depth and meaning. At the core, Cayce was a Christian mystic philosopher and an intuitive healer. For the forty-three years of his adult life, he taught by delivering discourses, or by giving “readings” while in a prayer-induced trance, which were transcribed by a secretary or family member because he could recall nothing once the twenty- to forty-five-minute sessions were over. The Edgar Cayce readings repeatedly emphasized the importance of meditation as an integral ingredient for personal transformation. 0:27.3	For a little while there, people had some difficulty listening to some of the Edgar Casey material.
0:33.3	Edgar Casey is very fascinating and has been referred to as the sleeping mystic.

0:47.4	In autumn of 1910, the New York Times brought the first major national attention to the name of Edgar Casey, a young man
0:55.2	who later became known as the father of holistic medicine and the founding voice of alternative
1:01.1	spirituality. The Sunday Times of October 9th, 1910 profiled the Christian mystic and medical
1:08.2	clairvoyant in an extensive article in photo spread, illiterate man becomes a doctor
1:12.8	when hypnotized. At the time, Casey then 33 was struggling to make his way as a commercial
1:19.0	photographer in his hometown of Hopkinsville, Kentucky, while delivering daily trans-based medical
1:25.0	readings in which he would diagnose and prescribe natural cures
1:28.9	for the illnesses of the people he had never met. Casey's method was to recline on a sofa or daybed,
1:36.7	loosen his tie, belt, cuffs, and shoelaces, and enter a sleep-like trance. Then given only the
1:43.1	name and location of a subject the sleeping
1:45.2	prophet was said to gain insight into the person's body in psychology by the time of his death in
1:53.4	january 1945 case he had amassed a record of more than 14,300 clairvoyant readings for people across the nation with many of the
2:05.2	sessions captured by stenographer Gladys Davis. In the 20s, Casey's trans readings expanded beyond
2:13.0	medicine to include life readings in which he explored a personal inner conflict and needs.
2:18.7	In these sessions, Casey employed references to astrology, karma, reincarnation, and number symbolism.
