Summary

Some churches are taking a break from worship on the Lord’s Day, and the crew brings the topic under the spotlight. A sound, biblical doctrine of worship, and of the means of grace, are essential to the understanding of why God’s people gather on the Lord’s Day. It’s how we recognize and appreciate the benefits we receive from the Lord through the preaching of His word, through the Lord’s supper, the fellowship of the believers, and more.Of course, there are some inevitable and unexpected events that might compel a small church to cancel a service. But, can the same events provide the reason for a church of hundreds, or even thousands, to call off the assembly? Don’t miss this important discussion of the Sabbath!Show NotesTHE 2000 BAPTIST FAITH & MESSAGEVIII. Welcome to Mortification of Spin, a casual conversation about things that count.

0:21.9

With Carl Truman, Todd Pruitt, and Amy Bird, Mortification of Spin is a weekly podcast from the Alliance of Confessing Evangelicals.

0:30.8

Let's join this week's conversation. You are listening to the Mortification of Spin.

0:46.4

Thank you so much for joining us.

0:48.6

My name is Todd Pruitt, and I'm joined as always by Carl Truman and Amy Bird.

0:53.4

And it is, as we're recording this, it's just a couple of days after the Sunday in between

1:01.0

Christmas and New Year's Day, which means it gave a number of rather large and famous churches

1:08.9

the opportunity to cancel services on Sunday December the 30th,

1:13.7

just as we saw happen a couple of years ago when Christmas and New Year's fell on on Sundays as well.

1:20.5

And so we were witnessed once again to this interesting phenomenon of particular well-known,

1:26.6

typically mega-churches canceling Lord's Day services.

1:31.9

And Amy and Carl, I kind of want to get your take on this because the reasons that these various

1:36.4

churches were giving were varied, although they were all connected, but it was, it was, you know,

1:41.6

their public announcements were things like, hey, you know, go home and worship with your families. This is a, you know, quote, one said, this is a great

1:48.8

opportunity to worship with your family. Some of them promoted this idea of canceling services

1:57.4

on Sunday as a chance for us to give our staff and our volunteers a break.

2:04.4

Although it's interesting, the churches that I saw on this also had links to how to give online.

2:09.5

So we're still giving. Don't withhold your tithe, but just don't come to church on Sunday because we're not having services.

2:18.0

So, again, we've seen this before when they cancel services on Christmas Day and or New Year's Day.

2:24.0

But once again, we see this trend.

2:28.7

And interestingly enough, one of the churches that canceled was the church whose pastor is the president of the Southern Baptist Convention, which is interesting because as long as I'm still talking here, I thought I'd read to you just the statement from the Baptist Faith and Message 2000.

2:46.2

Their statement on the Lord's Day is this.
