Summary

In this episode we explore the mythical history of the Svear, as it is related to us by the ever-entertaining Snorri Sturluson. Along the way we discuss Divine Kings, Deadly Vats of Meads and even a Half-Giant-Magical-Oxen-Son plough-team. Believe it or not, these fantastical, fictional tales lead us to some rather more concrete evidence about life and politics in the land of the Svear in the years leading up to the Viking Age.

All right, let's do this.

So in our last time out, we began this series by exploring the Baltic Sea region and the decades leading up to the Viking period.

1:28.0

What do we found was strong evidence in both literary and archaeological sources

1:35.0

that by the mid 700s or so,

1:38.0

extensive networks of trade, communication, and warfare had been established between people's living all along the Baltic Sea.

1:49.0

One of the most vivid illustrations which we have of these networks and their impact is a pair of

1:56.4

mass ship graves which have been uncovered near the village of Salome on the Estonian island of Sarima.

2:04.8

In these graves, archaeologists have uncovered the remains of 41 individuals, all of whom were mostly young, well-built men whose skeleton showed signs of a violent death.

2:19.6

Buried alongside the slain were swords, spears, and other weaponry, gaming pieces, and even the remains of

2:28.5

slaughtered animals. In short, these were all the accoutraments of a well-armed seaborne raiding party.

2:37.7

And what is more?

2:39.1

Thanks to modern archaeological science, we know that these individuals were not local to the island

2:46.7

on which they were interred. In fact, it's just possible that they originally hailed from Central Sweden.

2:55.9

In short, the remarkable graves at Sarima may well represent the remnants

3:01.7

of an unsuccessful raiding expedition, which had been launched
