Today we'll be looking at 1 Samuel chapter 8 verses 4 through 9 as we continue our series,

God's story. This is episode 22 in the series. Maybe think of it as chapter 22,

where we are following God's chronology of what he has done throughout human

history. Today, we're going to look at a time when God's people called out for earthly kings to

rule over them instead of God, who was already their divine king. We'll get to that in just a moment.

First, I invite you to pray with me. Our Lord and our God, we rest in the

knowledge that you are our God. We want you to show us how you are our supreme leader. You are the one

that matters the most and we need to keep our eyes firmly fixed on you through faith in your

Son, Jesus Christ. Guide us in understanding that today. In Jesus' name, amen.

Well, in our last episode in this God's story series, we saw how God's people started this

bad habit of turning away from God's laws and God's instruction in favor of their own ways. Well, that pattern throughout the book

of judges just continued. And God graciously would deliver the people again from the consequences

of their own sin over and over and over, and the people would not stick with their repentance.

They would eventually succumb to the temptations that were around them

once again. Well, here in 1 Samuel, chapter 8, we see right at the tail end of the judges period

that the elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah and said to him,

behold, you are old and your sons do not walk in your ways.

Now appoint for us a king to judge us, like all the nations.
