Among all the memorable moments in CS Lewis's The Chronicles of Narnia, one of my favorites

comes near the end of the voyage of the dawn treader.

Kasby and in his crew land on an island inhabited by a retired star named Ramandu.

True to form, the young used to scrub puts his foot in his mouth.

He says, quote, in our world, a star is a huge ball of flaming gas.

Ramandu answers, well, even in your world, my son, that's not what a star is, only what it's made up.

In this exchange, as he does so often in the Narnia series,

Lewis brilliantly communicates a truth so often forgotten, especially in a secular age like hours.

There's more to the world around us than just its material stuff.

Much more.

Meaning, revelation, and mind are behind everything we see.

After all, it was all made by God for His glory.

There are no ordinary things.

At least not in the sense that materialists imagine.

John Calvin put it this way, there's not one blade of grass.

There is no color in this world, not intended to make us rejoice.

Well, whenever we take our cue from Holy Scripture,

Christians have taught that human beings and the entire created order declare the glory of God.

When we say this, we mean much more than just that the creation is evidence of God's existence,

though we certainly do believe that.
