Hello, SFIA audio listeners. In this month's Nebula exclusive, big alien theory,

0:05.2

we're asking the reason alien civilizations might be rare is because most aliens are huge.

We often think that one day the world will come to an end and humanity with it, and possibly with

0:26.9

us causing it, but what would our world be like if life persisted after humanity was gone?

0:35.7

Sometimes we contemplate an end to humanity but not to our world, and what that era might

0:41.1

be like depends a lot on why humanity went away.

0:44.5

There are many ways for how humanity might cease to exist on Earth, and so we all pick

0:49.6

six basic scenarios to examine, which I think convert over to most other cases reasonably well,

0:55.8

those will be, one, an extinction-level natural catastrophe.

1:00.5

2. Mass destruction by us nukeying ourselves, or dystopian industrial scenarios.

1:07.3

3. A super plague.

1:09.8

4. Artificial Intelligence kills us off.

1:13.3

5. Aliens come by and kill us off.

1:17.2

And 6. Humanity abandons Earth.

1:21.2

And after we go through those, we'll talk about scenarios for afterwards in a more general sense,

1:26.8

like asking if some other

1:28.3

critter might evolve to replace us as intelligent players, and if so, if they might just

1:33.7

be the first in a series of doomed civilizations to arise. We are assuming we're there

1:39.3

first such civilization on Earth, though we examine the scenario that we might not be the first in our

1:45.1

episode The Cylirian Hypothesis, as well as our episode's cyclic apocalypses.
