2009 年，精神卫生中心报告我国重性精神病患人数超过 1600 万。但截至 2018 年底，在册严重精神障碍患者只有 599.4 万。与之对应的是，精神卫生服务资源严重短缺且分布不均。全国精神卫生工作规划（2015~2020 年）调查我国精神科床位只有 22.8 万张，且集中在省级和地市级城市。
2019 年，首次全国性精神障碍流行病学调查明确精神分裂症及其他精神病性障碍患病率农村高于城市。
这些数据彼此落差的夹缝里，是众多未被记录的，难以获得正常治疗和服务的农村精神病患者。
