Did you have experiences of the demonic as a kid?

Oh yeah, yeah. Sometimes when you call into the darkness, nothing comes. Sometimes something does come and in our home it did. Think of the time you were most afraid. And then you enter into a demonic context. It's a million times worse. So I know what it's like. When I read your book on the discernment of the spirit, I was in tears. The Word of God is not ink and paper. You know, it's alive, it's living, as Hebrews says.

it's healing. That's what kept me out of a casket. How do you mean? I think you get this spiritual

life sound first. Because if you don't get that first and there's demonic activity, it doesn't

Dan Burke, welcome back to the podcast. It's great to be back. Good to be in person. Yes, I'm so glad. I've been looking forward to this and people loved our conversation. It's been almost two years now, I think. What's the name of your organization and give us the quick background on the why behind the organization that you founded? Yes, it's called the Avala Institute,

and it's the reproposed Catholic mystical tradition to the church.

So we do priestly formation in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the United States.

We teach in several seminaries.

We do lay formation through spiritual direction.com and all of the books that we have. So the purpose is just, I don't know, 2009, I can't remember if we talked about this before, but in 2009, I started spiritual direction.com because I had become Catholic and I was a little bit surprised about how much non-Christian Eastern spirituality had crept into the church.

And I couldn't find good web resources for authentic Catholic mystical tradition.

So that's how it really started.

It started as a blog.

And then it grew into a much larger institution that none of us had any idea would emerge.

But I think the Lord just blessed it because it's such a need in the church of how do we come to know Jesus really intimately as the mystics teach us.

And then that affects, of course, how we live.

And so, you know, I'm most excited right now about

our priestly formation because that's going to affect generation on generation.
