We're talking today with Ansel Miapi, a professor of philosophy and a member of the crisis group about his new book, The Self-Devouring Society, Capitalism, Narcissism, and self-destruction.

to English for Common Notions Press. The book's tagline is everybody can feel that the world is getting

angrier. The self-devouring society provides an original and rigorous explanation of why.

It's true that it's the origin of the critic of value but it doesn't exist nearly anymore as a magazine.

Well I think a lot of our listeners will appreciate that you were involved in the crisis group.

Yes, and I think they'll appreciate this book too.

It's a very clear and interesting theory on, I think the biggest value of the book for me is the question of these mass shootings and

random acts of violence that you generally put under the umbrella of running a muck that

gets away from this sort of really disgusting way of looking at those events

where you're trying to look at the motive and if the motive fits your worldview

of like who the evil enemy is whether they be Nazis or ISIS or leftist or whoever.

You put things into that camp and you see a you use a you know the the criticism of value

and psychoanalysis to find a commonality between these events that I

thought was really valuable.
