0:00.0	In 1948, following the end of the British mandate in Palestine, the state of Israel, as a Jewish state, was declared by David Ben-Gurian, executive head of the World Zionist Organization in what is referred to by Palestinians as the Nakhba, or catastrophe.
0:15.0	Conflict in the region continues to this day. But despite the prevalence of nationalism, small groups within Israel have opposed
0:22.1	Zionism and colonialism and instead fought for another episode of the working class history podcast. My name is Matt
0:57.2	and today is the first of a two-par on the anti-Zionist movement in Israel with a particular focus on
1:03.9	the revolutionary socialist group Mutsben. A small group originating in a split from the Israeli
1:09.7	Communist Party in 1962,
1:12.1	Matspen punched far above their weight, gaining a profile which made them infamous in Israel
1:16.7	for their uncompromising line on the occupied territories and the Zionist project as a whole.
1:22.9	Over the next couple of episodes, we're going to hear from some Matspen activists
1:26.9	and talk about their experiences of radical political organising inside Israel.
1:32.3	First up, we hear from one of Matspen's founders, Moshimacher, to hear about his part in this fascinating chapter of working class history.
1:40.3	Before we start talking about Metspen, I was hoping you could maybe explain to some of our listeners what Zionism is.
1:48.0	It's really very simple because Zionism is both a project and an ideology.
1:55.0	So as an ideology, it is the claim that Jews all over the world are not a religious denomination,
2:08.6	but a nation.
2:11.2	And the second part of it is that the real homeland of this nation is the land of Israel, which is roughly what
2:22.3	used to be called Palestine, but may be defined as a little bit larger than Palestine as
2:31.3	it was under the British Monday. But the land of Israel, the ancient homeland of the Jewish nation.
2:38.1	And so just clearly, because the British mandate was the part of Palestine,
2:43.0	a part of the Middle East that was run by the British.
2:45.9	Well, I can go into this because the history is a bit complicated,
