Hello, this is Mark, the podcast producer.

We're still in a national lockdown here in the UK,

and as we did during the lockdown last year

we're bringing you, our listeners, some extra content.

Our VE Day and VJ Day,

it happened here episodes last year,

featured short clips from dozens of our veterans

telling us what they got up to on those historic days.

With these oral history specials,

we can finally bring you the longer versions

of those interviews, allowing our veterans to tell their own stories, in their own voices and

in their own way. Vital to us capturing these interviews are a team of brilliant volunteers who

go and visit our veterans at home to record them. So in this episode we joined one of those oral history volunteers,

Mike Chapman, who in 2017 travelled up to the Scottish borders to interview Mary Sherrard.

Mary recorded a fascinating and especially long interview with Mike. So we're going to bring you

this in two parts. In this first part, Mary tells us about joining the Women's Royal Naval Service,

the Wrens, and then arriving at Bletchley Park in 1942.
