Mark Mahalovic pulled into his driveway after a business trip to Cincinnati, Ohio.

He had just gotten back to his home in Bay Village, just west of Cleveland, in Cuyahoga County, Ohio,

and was probably so thankful to be back home, as we all are after some time away.

Perhaps thinking about sleeping in his own bed,

having a nice dinner with his family, hearing about his sons and his daughter's day at school,

and finally being able to relax. But the scene he walked into was the furthest thing from the calm

When he walked into his home, around 5.30 p.m. on October 27, 1989, he found his wife

frantic. Their 10-year-old daughter had never returned home from school that day.

at a friend's house. He never got to feel that flood of relief when you find your child safe and you

chuckle to yourself at how much you overreacted at what was merely a miscommunication. Mark

Mahalovic, with Margaret, his wife, and his son Jason, only got to feel the opposite

emotions. Anxiety, dread, and grief. Grief that you couldn't imagine. And now, 30 years later, the perpetrator of the crimes we will talk about today is still out there,
