Summary

Should Trump Have the Power to Take Us to War?

Tensions between Iran and the United States are growing thanks to President Trump. But does Trump have the ability to take us to war? Only Congress can authorize a war. It’s right there in the Constitution. The Founders did this because they did not want any president to ever acquire the king-like power of war making: they believed it was too much power in the hands of one person, and thus could lead to disaster.

If Donald Trump tries to take us into war with Iran, Congress and massive public opinion must stop him. Call your member of the House and both your senators today. ~ Thom describes the history and origins of the Saudi war with Yemen. ~ Jefferson's Three Tyrannies are at play today- theocrats, warlords, and the rich. Does Mr. Bone Saw represent all three? ~ The discussion deepens with Thom's educated and thoughtful callers. ~ [BREAK AND DISCUSSION CONTINUES] - 'Muhammad: Prophet of Peace Amid the Clash of Empires' ~ Who really benefits when Saudis buy American military hardware? Do we have a mutual defense pact with 'The Kingdom'? ~ Dave in Massachusetts think the drones could have been fired from inside Saudi. Catherine in Vermont says Trump is betraying our military. ~ Talk Media News report.

Last time around when Trump was tweeting about this, it was that he was cocked and loaded.

0:31.4

Now he's locked and loaded. He's fitter figuring out the rhetoric. There's a bunch of issues

0:40.6

that are pulling together here at the same time.

0:42.5

The first is that the Constitution does not give the President of the United States the right

0:48.9

to declare war.

0:51.6

And the framers of the Constitution were very, very clear about that.

0:56.0

That declaring war was a kingly power and they never wanted a president of the United States to have that power. They did not want the guy who

1:04.3

was in charge of the military to be able to make a decision about whether or not to use the

1:10.1

military. They had seen example after example in you know a

1:15.5

thousand years of European history where the guy who ran the military was

1:21.2

also the king was also the guy who made decisions about using the military and

1:25.0

made those decisions stupidly inappropriately in ways that would you know grand eyes

1:30.9

or improve the wealth of himself things like this and they

1:34.4

said just no

1:36.2

ain't gonna happen

1:38.0

so article one of the constitution is

1:40.6

quite clear quite explicit that only Congress can make war.

1:45.5

Only Congress can make those decisions.
