And As longtime listeners and readers now, one of my favorite games of all time is Jordan

Macbner is The Last Express.

Maybe it's fair to say that it's one of those games that haunts me, a game of

historical melancholy that shattered my admittedly pain-glossian view of history as an American

kid growing up in the sustained triumphalism of the 1990s. To a less intense

degree his remake of Prince of Persia, the Sands of Time, is also marked by a

sense of tragic wistfulness. It is a game where the heroes save the day and lose each other in the process,

ending with the knowledge that one of them carries memory that nobody else will ever

share except as a charming and unbelievable story.

Jordan Meckner's newly published graphic novel

Memoir of an uprooted family places these works

and Meckner as an historical figure in the games industry

in a richer historical context.

It tells the story of three generations of his family, the life in Europe that they lost, and the one that Meckner has in various ways spent decades trying to recapture.

I'm joined by Duncan Fife who reviewed replay for us this week in an absolutely fantastic article.

and themes of Meckner's memoir have cropped up again and again
