Summary

Anna Sonoda, LCSW is a graduate of Emory University, where she double-majored in Anthropology and French Studies, and earned her Master’s in Social Work from the University of Georgia in 2006. She became a licensed clinical social worker in 2009. With a career spanning counseling convicted sexual offenders, working in residential mental health, leading anger management and domestic violence programs, and supporting individuals with dual diagnoses, Anna brings rare, front-line expertise into the realities of predatory behavior. As both a clinician and a mother, she recognized a profound gap: society reacts to child sexual abuse after the fact but rarely teaches families how to stop it before it begins. This realization inspired her groundbreaking work, Duck Duck Groom: Understanding How a Child Becomes a Target (2022), a first-of-its-kind resource equipping parents and professionals to detect grooming before abuse occurs. We're thrilled today to be joined by Anna Sonoda, who is an author and a child psychologist,

0:36.1

and she wrote a book called Duck, Duck, Groom, that caught our attention at CrimeCon, and we felt like we needed to have her on to discuss the topic in general. So, Anna, thanks for joining us today.

No problem, guys. It's such a pleasure to be here with you, both Jamie and John. And as a licensed

0:49.4

clinical social worker who's trying to make an effort to improve the way that people understand grooming.

0:55.7

This is an incredible step in the right direction for the movement that I'm trying to create

1:00.3

and build across the country. So thank you for having me on. Yeah, and we'll get more into that

1:05.2

movement in our state here in Kentucky in just a moment. But first, I want to start with the basics about the book.

1:11.8

Can you tell us a little bit about what it's about and then also what inspired you to write this book?

1:17.7

Absolutely. So ducked up groom, understanding how a child becomes a target, was born out of my

1:23.9

frustration with a repeated conversation I kept having with parents on the playground

1:30.7

and coffee shops or at birthday parties because my background as a clinical social worker

1:36.8

is a former therapist to convicted sex offenders.

1:40.9

And so when I left that position and started raising my own family, I recognized that

1:46.5

something had been left within the clinical space. And it hadn't made its way to the forefront of

1:52.4

everyday parents. So I came into parenting recognizing risks of something called grooming that

1:59.6

is the perversive courtship process that happens

2:03.0

in advance and alongside physical child sexual abuse.

2:08.6

And what I realized is parent after parents that I would interact with would say, oh,

2:14.8

I'm worried about that guy over there or I'm worried about the guy in the

2:18.1

van. I'm not necessarily thinking about a family member, an older relative who maybe lives in the

2:25.3

house, an older sibling who might be in a home. And what I recognized was there's a gap.
