This week on lectures in history,

Tauson University history of professor Elizabeth Gray talks about the use and public

opinions on opium and laudanum in the 19th century.

Professor Gray describes how most laudanum addicts at the time were upper-class women,

who originally had been prescribed the drug by their doctors.

She argues that since men at the time were less likely to seek medical attention,

and it was more socially acceptable for them to drink,

this created a gender divide between alcoholics and opium addicts.

Her class is about 45 minutes.
