PJ O'Rourke, a Cato Institute Menkin Research Fellow, is among America's

funniest writers. He visited the Cato Institute earlier today to discuss his new book,

Driving Like Crazy, 30 years of vehicular hell-bending, celebrating America the way it's

supposed to be. With an oil well in every backyard, a Cadillac

escalate in every carport, the chairman of the Federal Reserve mowing our lawn.

O'Rourke began his remarks with a poem he wrote to Cato founder and president and Crane.

The feminist grabbed our women, the liberals banned our guns, the health cops snuffed our cigarettes,

the bailout has our funds, the laws of breathalyzing put an end

to our roadside bars, circle the Fords and Chevys boys that are coming to take our cars.

Finally got through to them what it is, what it is that cars have to do with

Libertarianism. And it is time, alas, to say, how shall we put it,

Sayanara to the American car.

The American automobile companies, Ford GM, even Chrysler,

they will live on in some form, a kind of a marley's ghost dragging their

chains at taxpayer expense, you know.

The fools in the corner offices of Detroit and the fool officials of Detroit's unions, they will retire

to their vacation homes in Palm Beach and St. Pete.

They know more deserve our sympathy than do the malevolent trolls under the capital dome down the street here.

But pity the poor American car when Congress and the White House get through with it.

A light wheat weight vehicle with a small carbon footprint using alternative energy and

renewable resources to operate in a sustainable way.
