Summary

n this episode Caroline, Nick and Liz have the latest on the trial of the men accused of abusing Preston Davey - and why it's been delayed. We've also got a chat about jury trials and why there are more voices calling for David Lammy not to scrap them, and after the acquittal of Chris Trybus this week for manslaughter, coercive control and rape, we've got an interview about the broader issues around domestic violence, but unconnected with those charges of which Chris Trybus was acquitted.

Welcome to the trial UK, driven to death. I'm Caroline Cheatham.

0:10.4

And I'm Liz Hull. And I'm Nick Fage.

0:12.9

Hi, both of you. Nice to have you both on the podcast at the same time. How are you?

0:17.1

Very well, thank you.

0:18.0

Yeah, very good. Thank you.

0:19.3

We should explain why we're all here, shouldn't we? So, first of all, today's episode was supposed to be an update on the latest in the

0:26.1

case of Preston Davy, which of course is the trial, our new series that's taking place in

0:32.7

Preston Crown Court. Or I should say it was taking place in Preston Crown Court. That is not happening

0:39.6

anymore. That's been paused, albeit very briefly, which is why today's episode is going to be

0:45.8

about what's happened up there in Preston, why that's been paused, but also a bit more on

0:52.0

the Chris Tribus trial and those not guilty verdicts which we got on Wednesday,

0:57.9

which is also why Nick is here. We'll be back in a second. So Liz, talk us through first of all, what's happened in the Preston Davy case and why we can't

1:31.5

bring an episode on that today as planned. Okay, so the trial of Jamie Varley and John McGowan

1:38.4

for Zachley, the two men who are accused of sexually abusing Preston Davy, the poor 13-month-old baby boy who died in

1:48.7

July 23. You remember from our episode on Tuesday that Varley's also accused of murdering Preston

1:55.5

who suffocated and died four months after being placed in their care because they were trying to

2:01.9

adopt him. So we were four days into this trial. It started on Monday. Peter Wright, Casey,

2:07.2

opened the case on Monday and Tuesday. And on Wednesday, we got to the first live witnesses,

2:14.7

which we were going to bring you on today's episode. So we briefly heard from

2:19.0

Preston's foster mum and a couple of the social workers that were responsible for the adoption.

2:25.8

But when I arrived at court this morning, it transpired that there was a problem. And there's not

2:33.2

much that we can actually tell you about what the problem is,
