There's a story that Franklin Roosevelt was talking with one of his older New York state political operators, Lewis Howe, a guy who had come from the rumble and tumble of New York

City politics, Franklin from New Hyde Park and a wealthy aristocratic family.

And Howe said to Roosevelt, you've got to relate to the working man.
