Good morning and welcome to the Independent Republic of Mike Graham right here on Talk Radio.

The polls are open and it is the day to cast your vote.

And as a result, we will not be discussing the election or politics for the next three hours.

You might be delighted to hear that.

Instead, we'll be getting our teeth into a variety of subjects which are just as important,

if not more important than what will happen throughout the course of the day.

First up, we're talking drink driving because alcohol

related deaths on the road are actually on the rise in this country, as more and more people

believe that they are less and less likely to be stopped and breathalized. It's another sign

that the police are overworked and underfunded, but it's also a symptom of a bigger problem, isn't it?

And that is that we allow a far larger degree of alcohol in the bloodstream than most other European countries,

something that has remained unchanged in 50 years.

And if you think about all the laws that have changed over the course of the last 50 years,

you might be permitted to wonder why this particular law has not been changed.

Surely the time has come to ban alcohol when driving altogether.

I know there's going to be some numpty ringing in to say,

oh yeah, but what about if you drink some listerine

that might have some alcohol in it, then you get done?

Well, of course, you won't get done for that.

Or what if you produce alcohol in your bloodstream?

Just by some kind of weird dint of chemistry?

No, that's very, very rare.
