0:11.0	I'm Jeff Parrot. Back in 1917 a wave of young Americans enlisted in the
0:18.3	military to join the cause of their country in World War I. Why? What caused that wave of people enlisting? The reasons
0:26.1	undoubtedly varied from person to person, but one of the causes for this enlistment boom
0:30.8	is attributed to a collection of words and pictures.
0:34.8	More specifically, the words and pictures of enlistment posters.
0:39.5	In 1917, the United States government began a renewed and successful recruitment campaign
0:44.6	using these posters to draw young Americans into the drama of world events.
0:49.4	Now the goal of these posters wasn't simply to give the public stories about the war in Europe.
0:55.3	It was all about getting Americans to join the story.
0:59.0	It was less about mere information and more about participation.
1:03.0	The recruitment posters, if you look at them, they do stir up a sense of participation in a masterful way.
1:10.0	One reads this, the Navy needs you.
1:13.5	Don't read American history.
1:15.9	Make it.
1:17.3	The most iconic poster in this era features Uncle Sam
1:20.4	pointing at the viewer stating,
1:22.2	I want you for U.S. Army.
1:25.0	Now this use of words and images to stir up participation into something bigger,
1:30.0	it wasn't new in 1917, and it wasn't new in America.
