In April of 2019 I was in San Marcos Texas for an academic conference called

of Gods and Monsters. As with many conferences, some of the most interesting interactions took place between sessions and over meals and drinks.

I need to thank Joe Laicock and Natasha Mikkels for the work they did to organize this event.

You will be hearing more about this conference in the future because I think several new episodes are going to come out of it.

Over lunch one day I was discussing the problem of language around monsters with some of the attendees.

There is, it seems, a problem where Western English speakers like to slap their own labels

on other cultures monsters.

As an example, I mentioned dragons. How could the word dragon really apply to all the different kinds of

dragons in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East? Some have wings and some have multiple heads

and some are seen as evil and some are seen is good.
