This stark warning on tariffs from the US Federal Reserve Bank chair, Jerome Powell, sent stocks tumbling today.

The level of tariff increases announced so far is significantly larger than anticipated,

and the same is likely to be true of the economic effects, which will include higher inflation

and slower growth. Both survey and market-based measures of near-term inflation expectations have moved up significantly,

with survey participants pointing to tariffs.

This kind of intervention is rare from a Fed chief, and Trump was quick to attack the messenger.

Powell's termination cannot come fast enough, he posed.

But countries around the world are asking a fundamental

question. Is it in our best interest to align more closely with China or with the United States?

The Wall Street Journal reports, the Trump team, led by the Treasury Secretary Scott Besant,

is using tariff negotiations to pressure allies to limit trade with China,

while China seeks to position itself as a force for stability and peeled business away from
