uncommon or potentially puzzling words and phrases used in this chapter

Omni ignotum pro Magnifico, a Latin phrase which means that which is not known is enchanting.

There's a section where Van Helsing talks a lot about blood and bloom. Van Helsing here is speaking as a non-native speaker of English, puzzled at hearing dock workers' excessive use of the English curse words

blooming and bloody as in my blooming feet are killing me

and all my bloody back aches for example and he also says polyglot a few times, which if you don't know a polyglot is a person who speaks many languages.

Then we have Tomains.

This is a generic name of certain poisonous alkaloid bodies

found in putrefying animal and vegetable matter and once erroneously thought, as seems to be the case here,

to be a cause of food poisoning.

And finally, Tobolsk is a city in Western Siberia. And that's it,
