Summary

Episode 76 with Dr. Sharon Saline.

"We all have different brains and we should honor neurodiversity in the same way we honor gender diversity or racial diversity or religious diversity."

Dr. Saline is a clinical psychologist and author of the award-winning book, What Your ADHD Child Wishes You Knew: Working Together to Empower Kids for Success in School and Life.

She lectures and facilitates workshops internationally on topics such as understanding ADHD, executive functioning, anxiety, motivation, different kinds of learners, and the teen brain. She is a regular contributor to ADDitude Magazine and Psychology, and currently hosts a live ADHD Support Group + Q&A every Friday over on Facebook with ADDitude Magazine.

Dr. Saline and I talk about how her interest in ADHD as a psychologist was sparked by her own neurodivergent family. We also talk about inattentive type ADHD in childhood and why so many kids — both boys and girls — with inattentive ADHD end up overlooked and ultimately diagnosed with depression and anxiety instead of ADHD.

We also talk about the adult diagnosis experience and the best ways for you and your doctor to determine whether you have ADHD as opposed to possibly another situational struggle.

Again, it depends on what you're experiencing and what your history is because you know,

0:05.3

what you're experiencing now, if it's vastly different than anything you've experienced,

0:10.1

and that probably doesn't indicate ADHD and it might indicate more situational anxiety

0:15.1

or depression. But if what you're experiencing now is just an exacerbation of things that have

0:19.3

already been present, then that's a

0:22.3

different sort of kettle of fish and worth exploring with someone.

Hello and welcome to the Women and ADHD podcast. I'm your host, Katie Weber. Before we get started, I'd like to share

0:38.4

with you this review from the Apple podcast platform from a listener called Poppy 888. And it is called

0:45.0

Wow, it all makes sense now. I was just diagnosed at age 44. Looking back at my whole life,

0:51.7

it all makes sense now. And wow, listening to you and your guests talk

0:57.0

makes me feel like I'm listening to myself, especially when a guest says something like,

1:01.4

wait, what were we talking about? After years of feeling like I was going crazy and a hot mess,

1:06.6

now I feel like I have a toolbox to help me through my daily struggles. And the more I listen to how other people move through their days, I feel seen.

1:14.3

I am so much more compassionate with myself knowing that I'm just fine and I'm actually doing

1:19.4

pretty great in my life, all things considered.

1:22.0

Oh my goodness, I love this sentiment and I share it completely.

1:25.4

So much of this diagnosis is about changing our view of ourselves and being

1:30.1

kinder to ourselves as we figure out what works best for us in our brains, rather than simply

1:35.5

feeling like there is something wrong with us. So thank you, Poppy, for writing that review.

1:39.8

And thank you to all of you who stop and take the time to leave reviews. I know it takes a lot of effort

1:46.3

to remember to stop what you're doing and put your thoughts into words. It's a lot. So thank you.

1:51.0

And if that is too much and I totally get it, then please just tap the five stars or you could
