Hello and welcome to the Midpoint. My guest today is Dr. Oscar Duke. He's a regular on the BBC's

0:09.7

Morning Live and has a string of TV appearances under his belt. He first featured in the hit Channel 4 series 24 hours in A&E

0:17.2

and then went on to present his own award-winning primetime documentary for BBC 2,

0:21.7

Born 2 White, an immersive expose of the mutilation and murder of people living with

0:26.2

albinism in East Africa. Oscar was born with the condition and understands only too well

0:32.3

the challenges that brings. So he's got plenty of media experience and his own podcast as well, Bedside Manners.

And today I really want to find out more about GLP-1s. So let's speak to Oscar.

0:49.1

Dr Oscar Duke, great to have you on the midpoint. And when I said your name then, it's just got such gravitas. I mean, doctors should have good, strong names, but that is one. I feel they should. I mean, Oscar used to be quite unique. And now, if you go to the park, every child and every dog, he's called Oscar. So it's a total night. When I was Oscar that were originally as a young Dr Duke. The Dr Dr Duke is all right. Yeah. I've, in your introduction, said you're quite a kind of old hand now,

1:16.5

a TV and media, aren't you? So this should pose no problems. This should pose no problems.

1:24.1

One of the things I want to get into is something that comes up quite a bit in terms of

1:28.4

feedback from people when we ask them for ideas. And we haven't discussed it at all actually on the

1:33.2

podcast. And nobody who's been on has said they're on them is GLP ones, which is the generic

1:39.3

name or the medical name for the drugs that we know as we go V and a Zem pic. Yeah, those sort of weight loss jabs, if you like. Yeah, there are others obviously on the market. In fact, an increasing amount on the market. So I have a lot of questions on them. First of all, let's get going with at the moment, if you had to kind of guess or do you know what percentage of people in this country or how many

2:01.0

people in this country are currently on these drugs? Well, I think maybe, as you said, no one who's come on has said they're on them. It probably gives you a good idea. It's difficult for us to know exactly how many people are on them because people aren't always very honest about them. So, obviously, a lot of prescribing that goes on in the private sector. more difficult to get through the NHS,

2:18.5

but through specialist weight loss management services,

2:21.3

you can get access to them.

2:23.3

And I think ever increasing numbers of people, we've had issues in the past where there have

2:27.3

been supply problems, and obviously there's that concern that people who are using them for

2:31.3

diabetes as well as perhaps weight loss are not able to get access to that sort of diabetic treatment that they really need.

2:37.6

I think we seem to be in quite a good sort of supply place at the moment, but the prices have

2:41.2

gone up recently as well.

2:42.5

Was that to do with Donald Trump or not?
