Summary
Today we speak to David Erritzoe (Clin Associate Professor in Psychopharmacology & Psychiatry) .
A leading researcher in the science of psychedelics, addiction, and mental health, David joins us to unpack what’s actually happening in the brain when patterns break, beliefs loosen, and change becomes possible. Together, we explore the tension between biology and meaning, evidence and experience — and what modern neuroscience can (and can’t) tell us about transformation.
This conversation sits right at the heart of the journey: a moment to question assumptions, re-examine what we think we know about the mind, and consider how altered states — whether clinical, chemical, or contemplative — might reshape the stories we tell about ourselves.
- David is a highly cited scientist (top 0.1% globally in 2025, Clarivate), and in 2025 received Imperial’s President Award for Excellence in Research, and his team has received several additional awards in recent years. David and his team have been awarded competitive grant & fellowship funding, hereunder from MRC/UKRI, NIHR and Welcome Trust. David has published 150+ scientic papers, contributed to 7 books (incl author of 6 book chapters), an per Dec 2025 has a Scopus h-index of 54 and 19k+ citations.

| 0:00.0 | Hello and welcome to the midpoint. We've got something a little bit different today. I've been fascinated by the increase in the noise around the use of psychedelics for mental health issues for a while now, while not knowing anything about it. It really is outside of my comfort zone. But late last year, I was made aware of Dr. David |
| 0:21.2 | Oruzzo and the work he's doing in this space. He's a clinical reader in psychopharmacology and |
| 0:27.1 | psychiatry at Imperial College London and the CNWL Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust. And since |
| 0:34.5 | David arrived at Imperial in 2009, he's conducted and overseen clinical and neuroimaging |
| 0:39.5 | trials into the treatment of disorders and addictions using psychedelics and has authored 145 peer-reviewed |
| 0:46.2 | scientific papers and five book chapters. So I feel we have the right person here to tell us all |
| 0:51.6 | we need to know about this growing area of medicine. So let's go |
| 0:55.0 | meet David. Dr. David, so welcome to the midpoint. Thank you so much. You've just revealed |
| 1:02.7 | as you walked in that you've come fresh from Davos, which I think actually tells us, and I said in the |
| 1:07.4 | introduction, the increasing noise around psychedelics. I think that tells us everything we need to |
| 1:10.6 | know about the direction of travel of psychedelics in the mainstream. |
| 1:14.9 | If you're invited to talk at Davos, then... |
| 1:18.4 | At least just in a side program, but still quite a lot of airtime down there for what we're doing. |
| 1:24.2 | Because the money men must see there's an opportunity here, right? |
| 1:27.6 | Yeah, I think so. |
| 1:29.0 | So I'll also in your introductory say, I know nothing about psychedelics. |
| 1:34.0 | I've never done them. |
| 1:34.8 | But I also am probably one of those people that needs a few myths busting about them. |
| 1:39.5 | So I hear the noise and I hear the good work that potentially is being done in terms of mental health issues and addictions, but don't understand how they work. |
| 1:50.6 | So we've got a lot to get into. |
| 1:52.6 | Yeah, sounds good. |
| 1:53.6 | Tell us how you started in this area and what drew you in? |
