Summary

Dr. Becky Kennedy joins Forrest for a conversation about building better relationships, with ourselves, our partners, and our children. They talk about Dr. Becky’s framework of “good inside,” and how we can apply it to ourselves. Dr. Becky explains how many of the struggles parents face trace back to their own childhood experiences, and suggests how we can reparent ourselves by learning emotional regulation, working with shame, and becoming sturdier. They also cover the limits of behavioral control models, deeply feeling kids, maintaining boundaries when things get hard, and building connection capital. About our Guest: Dr. Becky is a clinical psychologist, founder of Good Inside, and author of the book by the same name. She has over 4 million social media followers, and is one of the most influential people in the world of parenting today. Hello and welcome to being well. I'm Forrest Hansen. If you're new to the show,

0:10.2

thanks for listening today. And if you've listened before, welcome back. Today I am joined by a very

0:15.0

special guest, a clinical psychologist, best-selling author, mother of three, and maybe arguably the single most influential person in the world of parenting today, at least on millennial age people like myself, Dr. Becky Kennedy. Dr. Becky is the founder of Good Inside, is the author of the fantastic book by the same name, has over 4 million social media followers across the various platforms, and maybe somewhere in there

I really hope is getting enough sleep. So Dr. Pecky, how are you doing today? I'm great. And you

0:43.8

are actually catching me after I just went away with some girlfriends. And so, yes, trying to carve out

0:50.7

that time for ourselves and all the things that rejuvenate us. If I look extra energetic, that's why. Well, we're getting you in a fantastic mood that a great moment

in time. Just before we started recording, we were talking a little bit about your growing

business, which now has 60 some odd employees, it has an app, it has a whole bunch of courses and programs and offerings for

1:14.0

parents. And it's just crazy how much it's grown and how popular it's all become. Well, thank you.

1:18.5

I know we were also talking about the irony of kind of all this started because I just truly

1:22.5

love understanding people and learning their stories and thinking about how we operate in systems.

1:27.3

And that all

1:27.7

started in the privacy of my private practice and a very impactful, but kind of small number of

1:33.3

people. And the idea that I actually feel like I do today very similar things to what I did then,

1:38.9

but the impact can be so much wider. It sounds cheesy, but I really feel so grateful to be on so many people's parenting journeys and life journeys. So I just, I feel lucky when I get out of bed in the morning to do that. Yeah. And I think a lot of people are very grateful to have you and to have the work that you're doing this days as well. Thank you. And one of the things that really drew me to your work is how much of a focus you put on

2:01.3

self-development for parents and for people in general. It's one of the topics that makes your work

2:06.1

really accessible for people like me who aren't yet parents. And I think it's one of the things

2:10.3

that differentiates your approach from more traditional approaches to parenting. So I'm wondering

2:14.0

why you put so much of the focus there and what kind of drew you in that direction.

2:18.1

I think part of it is almost not that I intentionally put the focus on self, maybe versus child,

2:24.9

but at the end of the day, in any relationship we have, being able to say, what's coming up for me,

2:32.4

what's my job here, what's under my control? How can I grow through this
