1:24.0 | Dude, I have so many questions. I think I first heard the word peptide a few years ago and just went in one ear and out the other. |
1:33.6 | But now I hear about peptides all the time. In fact, I think some of the FDA-approved weight loss drugs that are currently exploding on the marketplace are peptides. |
1:47.2 | Is that right? Some of them? |
1:49.2 | Yeah, that's right. So, you know, peptides, so people understand like the first peptide that became really famous was a peptide called insulin. |
1:58.4 | I think most people have insulin. It was over 100 years ago and it was a remarkable discovery because they're able to put this chain of amino acids, which is a protein, and hence a peptide, and synthesize that to do a specific task, which is obviously insulin lowers blood sugar. |
2:14.4 | It sends a signal to your body to say, hey, take the sugar from your blood and put it into the cells. |
2:20.4 | So, basically people once they understand, okay, insulin is a peptide, so what are these designer peptides doing now? |
2:27.4 | They can send a signal and we can make them to send whatever signal we want, which is really cool if you think about it. |
2:33.4 | So, that means we can kind of manipulate the body in different ways to kind of achieve the targeted outcome. |
2:39.4 | And so, obviously with insulin, the outcome is to lower your blood sugar, but now we have peptides that can help with weight loss. |
2:46.4 | That's a Zempic or Semaglutide. That's the one that became really popular because the Kardashians did it, and then all these people started doing it, and it sold out. |
