The death of Queen Elizabeth II and the accession of her son, King Charles III, the throne

has inevitably started to conversation about the role of the royal family in the United

Kingdom and whether we even need a monarchy at all.

Very controversial questions and of course, discuss all of that.

I'm joined by an of our media's very own role correspondent, Ash.

Would you make it the last week?

It's been demented.

Like, I really understand that the first death of a monarch for 70 years is a big deal

that there are a great many monarchists in this country and they're going to be feeling

some type of way about the death of Elizabeth II and that's fine by me.

But when you see the institutions of the press and the state and corporations kick in to

enforce this top-down mourning, it's kind of nuts.

I don't know.

What do you make of it?

Is it as bad as you think?

I, in my mind, I think because, of course, the most recent example is Diana in 97, which

is in terms of a natural, organic bottom-up outpouring of grief was way bigger.

I sort of didn't know what to expect and while, yeah, the state-led, state-inforced

mourning from above has been impressive in a way.

Like, wow.

Amazing the BBC can talk every hour, four an hour about the royal family, four a week.

I feel like the bottom-up stuff isn't the same as Diana and it's not as atlandish as one
