14-year-old Abigail Williams and 15-year-old Liberty German were the best of friends.

So it was not unusual that they would choose to spend their day off from middle school together, doing something fun.

That Monday, February 13, 2017, was unseasonably warm for a wintery day in the rural, small town of Delphi, Indiana, where they lived.

So the teens decided to go hiking along a popular nature trail where they often went to hang out.

The path leads to one of the main attractions along the trail.

A looming abandoned railroad trestle known as Monin High Bridge.

There is no visible railing to keep anyone from falling more than 60 feet into the rocky creek bed below.

Libby's older sister Kelsey dropped the girls off around 135 that afternoon and drove away.

The two teens then walked along the bridge, taking photos and posting them on social media.

About a half an hour later, Libby posted a photo of Abby on Snapchat walking head down along the bridge, surrounded by bare-leaved trees.

She was wearing jeans, sneakers, a t-shirt and an open jacket, her hair tied on top of her head.

The girls were supposed to be picked up at 3.15 by Libby's father, but they failed to show up at the pre-planned meeting spot.

By approximately 5.30 pm that evening, police were called and the girls were reported missing.

At first, local enforcement did not think the girls were in imminent danger, but the search and rescue continued.

Around 12.15 the following day, a grisly discovery was made.

Their two bodies were found roughly half a mile upstream from the bridge, on a small piece of private property.

On February 15, police released a grainy photo Libby had taken on her cell phone the day she went missing.

The picture was of a man wearing jeans and a blue jacket.
