Hello, I'm J.B. and welcome to Winter on Down on the Farm.

Today, a farming family in East Lothian tells us about winter plowing.

I'll be mucking out my Tamworth pigs and Storm discovers what's different on a dairy farm at this time of year.

But first, we'll be listening to the sounds of winter.

Winter is the coldest season of our year.

We wrap up in our warmest clothes to keep out the frosty air and the bitter howling winds.

In the park, icy puddles crackle beneath our feet,

and noises seem to ring out more clearly through the bare branches of winter trees.

Sounds can travel further over frozen ground. But a thick blanket of snow can muffle sounds and echoes

making the world seem hushed and silent.

Some creatures have much better hearing than we do.

A barn owl flying across a farmer's field

can hear tiny mice and voles scurrying around underneath the snow.

Other creatures make sounds that we can hear.

Squirrels chase each other away up into the trees to protect precious stores of nuts buried in the ground.

At garden bird feeders, our feathered friends have noisy squabbles over much needed winter food.
