Hello, I'm J.B. and welcome to winter on Down on the Farm. Today, a farming family in East Lothian tells us about winter plowing. I'll be mucking out my tam with pigs and Storm

discovers what's different on a dairy farm at this time of year.

Winter is the coldest season of our year.

We wrap up in our warmest clothes to keep out the frosty air and the bitter howling winds.

In the park, icy puddles crackle beneath our feet,

and noises seem to ring out more clearly through the bare branches of winter trees.

Sounds can travel further over frozen ground.

But a thick blanket of snow can muffle sounds and echoes making the world seem hushed and silent.

Some creatures have much better hearing than we do.

A barn owl flying across a farmer's field can hear tiny mice and voles scurrying around
