U.S. stocks mostly climbed today, with the Dow Jones Industrial average rising half a percent to a new all-time high.

The S&P 500 also eeked out a record close, increasing by less than a tenth of a percent, while the NASDAQ slipped 0.3%.

Investors have largely shrugged off the ongoing government shutdown as enthusiasm for artificial

intelligence helped lift chip stocks. Among individual companies, applied material stock fell nearly

3 percent after the semiconductor equipment maker said new U.S. export rules would hurt its revenue.

Shares of Palantir dropped 7.5% following media reports about problems with the battlefield

communication network it's developing. Johnson and Johnson stock gained 1.4% to hit a new high

after receiving an analyst upgrade and a raised price target.

Shares of Hitachi surged over 10% after the company signed a preliminary deal with OpenAI.

And shares of casino operators, Las Vegas Sands, and Win Resorts were each down more than 7% due to concerns about traffic at their properties in Macau.
