Documentarian Doug Prey makes films

well about de facto families.

You look at his films hype, which dealt with the

Seattle music scene in the 90s, or Scratch

looked at the DJ culture.

They were kind of a family with family

codes and the kinds of a behavior.

In his new film, Surfwise, it is about an

actual family, the family of the legendary

Doc Paskowitz, who turned his family into a tribe of guerrilla surfers.

Doug, first of all, welcome back. Thanks for doing the show again.

I wonder part what attracted to you, the family of Doc Panskowitz suggests that he was such an incredible figure.

I mean, to get somebody who walked away from either he was,

I guess there was talk about him being a gubernatorial prospect in Hawaii, and he was the head

of the AMA, he come out of Stanford Medical School. He was, in a lot of ways, he was kind of a hero.

He kind of had it all going for himself, but I think deep in his heart, he was a surfer. And he had a couple bad divorces. And he basically

just need, he kind of decided to go to Israel for a year and find himself. And our movie kind of

begins at that moment where it sort of starts telling the story of a guy who basically just said, you know what,

I want to live life in the right way.
