Mr. Mendenhall came to my stand near the dairy kitchen in Tampa last night about 6 o'clock

and asked me to meet him at Tampa and Fortune Street at 20 minutes to 8.

I had my top down and he asked me to put it up and to go around on the side

street to do it. I asked him how long a trip we had and said I only had five gallons of gasoline.

He told me we would need at least 10 more. I got all the tank would hold. We then drove to the corner of Tampa and Fortune Street.

Miss Susie Elliott was standing on the sidewalk. She got into the car, and we drove to Magnolia Street

in Hyde Park, and took Mrs. Elliott in the car. Then he told me to go towards Green Springs. We drove through West Tampa toward Green Springs.

I started to turn out at the new road. He told me to go up the old road. I did so and turned on to it.

When I had driven half a mile, I heard a crash of glass and a woman scream.

I stopped the car quickly and turned to see Mr. Mendenhall in trouble with the woman.

I put on the brakes and turned around in my seat.

My God, Mr. Mendenhall, don't do that, I said.

He said, you let me alone, I'm doing this in self-defense.

I saw a pistol, heard a shot, and fled.

I heard several other shots.

I started toward Tampa and soon saw an automobile coming from toward Tampa.

I waved it down.

Ed Haley was driving a car.

I told him of the trouble and asked him to take me to Tampa.

He said, Clearwater's where you want to go.

And he brought me here.
