Written and read by me nine-year-old Amal-Amakeler Dorothy Machela stood on the wooden veranda of her family farmhouse.

She felt the heat rise up from the ground around her.

She looked out at the dry hot land.

She saw brown, brown dirt, brown grass,

and hungry thirsty brown cattle suffering under the burning sun.

What was that?

Dorothy had jumped as something touched her arm.

She tilted her head to the sky. It can't be, she said.

It is. The clouds turned gray and bunched together.

It was a tiny sput of water that Dorothea had felt on her arm.

The spinning became a slow shower,

and the slow shower became a downfall.

It was the most rain Dorothy I had ever seen.

Yepee, it's a miracle!

Dorothy, kicked her shoes, ran outside and started dancing.

Her bare feet bounced off the damp dirt.

She jumped, spun, screamed, and shouted.

Yeeh! My wishes have come true, she said.

The drought had finally broken.
