Hey, deserving listeners. It's just me today. Patron Xavier in France asked me to talk

0:14.1

about Winnecott. So that's what I'm going to talk about today. Yeah. Patron Xavier.

I love Donald Winnecott. I have since the early days of my master's degree. When I first

0:27.2

came across him and his teachings, I very much was gravitated toward it. The very first

0:35.7

theory that I fell in love with was his theory that he was a part of object relations. Yeah.

0:44.4

So he's one of the greats. Perhaps one of the most interesting figures in our field in

0:51.4

a lot of ways. He's hugely influential. He was a part of a huge shift in the way that psychology

1:02.0

and psychoanalysis looked at humans. He played a huge role in counter-transference understanding.

1:10.8

In a lot of ways, he set the stage for what we're all about today. But perhaps the most interesting

1:18.7

part about his career is that he used radio to spread his ideas about parenting. He had a show

1:26.6

on the BBC in Britain called the ordinary mother and her baby, the ordinary mother and her baby.

1:35.7

He had over 600 episodes, which is crazy. I mean, this podcast hasn't had 600 episodes. I don't

1:42.9

think. You can listen to him on the internet. Just Google it. It's so fascinating to hear these

1:49.2

episodes because they go back to, geez, I don't know, the mid-century at some point last time.

1:55.8

Can you imagine this? He was broadcast all over Britain talking about child psychoanalysis. It's

2:05.6

crazy. He talked about how to help children develop. He gave a lot of advice. Actually, he gave a

2:13.3

lot of specific advice. Like, don't send your seven-year-old to boarding school, which was sort of like

2:19.4

the dream of all parents in Britain at the time was to have enough money to send your young child

2:23.8

to boarding school so they could become proper British people. But what Winnecott was observing was

2:31.9

that this was actually harming children. It turned children into these kind of immature robots and

2:40.5

which I could absolutely see happening. It's interesting to think about Winnecott on the radio

2:48.8

once a week or something, or I don't know how often, probably more than once a week. He's on
